Ayurveda

Ayurveda, basically translates to ‘science of life’.

Originating in India, it is one of the oldest (over 3000 years) health care system, focusing not only on curative but also preventive aspects of health.

Just as the world is made up of five elements, Vayu (Air), Jala (Water), Aakash (Space or ether), Prithvi (Earth) and Teja (Fire) the same applies to the human body.

Ayurveda, narrows these five elements to three basic humors affecting the human body: –

1) Vatta dosha – controls the flow of movement and determines your flexibility, movement of muscles, joints, blood flow and way you take your breaths. It also maintains balance of electrolyte, elimination of waste products

2) Pitta dosha – controls digestion, hormones and metabolism, regulates body temperature, coordination of optic nerve and management of hunger and thirst.

3) Kapha dosha – is an element that holds together your cells, muscles, bones and ligaments. It is one of the doshas known for endurance and lubrication.

As per Ayurveda, each person’s constitution is made up of the above three, and which control the basic physiological functions of the body and dictate your emotional strengths, weaknesses along with the foods you crave.

When any imbalance happens between the three doshas a state of illness or disease occurs.

Ayurveda practitioners believe that a perfect balance between the natural elements and the three doshas of the human body should be maintained for a healthy state of living. They (Ayurveda practitioners) help you find a balance among the three doshas by using nutrition, stress management, exercise, and sometimes herbs to help a person regain health and balance.
